Hello, There is a new release of Win4IcomSuite that now supports remote access with its included Client Server applications. A unique feature of Win4IcomSuite is its included virtual radios that allow connection of up to 7 applications simultaneously and even remotely.

Win4IcomSuite supports the IC-7300, IC-7600, IC-7610, and IC-7850/51 providing access to the built in spectrum scopes (not the 7600) for both receivers and it also supports the SDRPlay RSP's.

You can see an overview here: https://youtu.be/mVVm5KambB0

and a new video on Installation of the application as well as the Client Server Network install.

You can download a fully functional 30 day trial at icom.va2fsq.com

Awesome work Tom!!!

Can you please provide a little more detail on the configuration at the PC that is directly connected to the radio and on the PC that is remote? I have looked over the documentation and I did not see anything concerning the comm port setup on both sides. Below is an example of something I would see typical for a DXLab User wanting to work remote from his/her shack with any mode:

Server PC (directly connected to Radio)

  • Hardware:
    • Radio connected directly
    • Winkeyer connected to radio and PC
    • Computer Controlled Rotator for antenna
  • Software:
    • Win4icom Suite ( w/COMMOCOM)
    • DXLab Suite ( or N1MM+)
    • WSJT-X
    • JT-Alert
    • CW Skimmer

Since the Server (Local PC) is where most operators operate their stations from what changes (if any) has to be done if we want to work remote?

So with the above, to be able to work any mode what are the steps that need to happen on the remote PC?

Trying to identify all of the capabilities and want to know if there are limitations to our imaginations. Take a look at the limitations fo Flex Radio’s current limits with their remote setups. (CW is via CW-X, Phone, and no digital modes )

Again, I think this is an awesome foot (miles) forward.

Hi,

All details are in the manual (Part 3) and in a video on YouTube at https://youtu.be/ZnSa3LsuuvI

The PC used as a server can be an older PC. It doesn’t take much CPUpower.

The first thing you are going to want to do is just get Win4Icom working onthe PC connected to the radio with a direct USB connection. Get used to itthere. You can follow the guides on third party connectivity under https://icom.va2fsq.com/third-party-software-and-hardware-integration/

This link has specific examples. There is also a video at https://youtu.be/1jh6IS0S1dE Itsfor Elecraft radios but it is identical.

Once you understand all of that, you can instead of connecting directlywith Win4Icom to the radio, you can run the Icom Server instead.Everything on the radio is the same and the comport for the server is the same. You then just connect with the Win4Icom software, change to a network connectionand you are good to go. Follow the video!

Now, if you run the Win4IcomSuite software on the server, you only need tochange from connecting via the com port to connecting by the network. Therest of the configuration remains the same.

Now, if you wish to install things on a laptop or a remote site forexample, you just install Win4IcomSuite and use the network connection. For all the third party software you will reinstall it on the laptop in theexact same way as the computer when it was connected directly to theradio.

For remote use, there is a CW terminal in Win4Icom. So you can usethe keyboard. If you want to use a WinKey instead with a paddle then themakers of WinKey provide a remote network installation which uses twoWinKey’s.

As to other items...

An antenna rotator can’t easily be supported remotely. There are justtoo many different interfaces. However, it is important that you alwayshave a remote connection using something like TeamViewer which is free. There you can login and use the native rotator program.

As to CWSkimmer, it will work with a limited bandwidth audio connection onthe remote PC.

I do plan a couple of new things for the future such as support of remotepanadapters like the SDRPlay, AirSpy and ext_io devices. of course for the7610, I will eventually support the new IQ out. For now, the only remotepanadapters are the built in ones in the radios.

All the other applications will work remotely assuming you have a decentnetwork. I was for example able to use my phone as a hotspot, get in my car withmy laptop and do a bunch of WSJT contacts while driving. Your mileage mayvary though. We have pretty good 100mb+ LTE here in Montreal.

Hi,

For a remote rotator, there is this software which will work via anetwork:

I have no experience with it though.

Very nice Tom. I wonder if you or anyone else have any future plans for an iPhone app that would allow access via network to Win4Icom Suite? Would that even be possible? Would be nice if it was.
But you have already done a great job.

Hi

Teamviewer would work as suggested. I have video on YouTube about remote operation of wink3suite using teamviewer and an android tablet. I'm sure the iphone and iPad would work similarly.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for getting the networking going, I'm looking forward to using it this winter when my shack gets cold.

I followed your YouTube video and set-up went without a hitch.

I am now wondering what the minimum specs are for a router that gives a good experience on a lan, eg operating from a different room in the same house as the radio.

I am using a Netgear DGN2200 which is a 2.4 Ghz 300 mbps wifi router. Even when I am the only one on the network, control of the radio is sluggish at best and nearly every attempt to change frequency gets me the "retry or close" error message. Maybe relocating the router closer to the shack would help? An option to disable the "retry or close" error might eliminate some of the frustration.

Though I haven't tried to transmit over the lan, the received sound quality is acceptable most of the time, I have the jitter buffer set at 15. Thanks /John W7SWB

Hi

Which radio please? Also what is the version number of win4icom?

All of them have been tested with the exception of the 7600...

What happens if you run win4icom on the same machine as the server?

We need to eliminate any other errors to make sure it's the router.

How far is your router? How many rooms between?

Hi

Further to my last email.

If the client works fine on the same machine as the server the likely issue then is your wireless network.

The netgear you have is quite old. Things have changed a lot. There are better radios, and better protocols available these days and much more throughput. Furthermore I'm pretty sure that router would not work well over 10mb on the internet.

I use a tplink archer c3200. It has 2 5ghz radios and 1 2.4ghz. But is has really good throughout, it can easily handle a dozen 1 GB connections.

I have spent a lot of time and gone through many routers and this one is quite decent. I can get full throughput to the internet at 120mb/s from all my devices, computers phones etc. My laptop is wireless and supports 802.1 ac protocol. I can connect to the router at 700mb /s the same as my phone.

That being said, wireless is never really 100% reliable. I am about 8 feet from my router and I still occasionally get delayed packets and I am usually the only client active. I dont get the error messages though.

A wired connection is best. However, my house is 2 stories high and my main computer and shack is in the basem*nt. I run a ethernet cable from my shack computer to my router which is 1gb. The router is on the main floor so more or less in the middle. If I walk down to the shack where my main computer is the signal is almost gone. It's fine with a 2.4ghz but you should use the 5ghz if possible. Less interference, less latency but poorer range.

So, what would be a good setup in your case?

I think a wired connection from the shack to your house directly into the router. Then you can use your laptop wirelessly without any issues of whether your shack can also connect wirelessly.

That is what I had to do.

Hi Tom,
Radio is a 7300, software version is v1.184-x64
Haven't really tried running on the same machine as the server, will do that and get back to you, probablly tomorrow
2 rooms (3 walls) between the wifi router and the radio/server, probably around 25 feet.
Thanks /John

Regarding running everything on the same machine... Radio control works just like when through the USB cable, very nice. However the band scope generates retry or close messages.
Got some cat-5 cable on order to hardwire the server to the router as you suggest.
Thanks for the help. /John

Hi,

I presume you are using the address of one of the network interfaces.

Instead, on the local machine, changed the addresses to 127.0.0.1

That will not use the wireless connection.
